Our world is different for everybody who really gets into video games. It is a clash between reality and the virtual world. It takes place in gamers minds who can sometimes see the world in one big video game. Video games where the purpose is to just shoot each other such as Halo 3 or Counterstrike have no real plot and the characters do the same thing over and over again. They never age, eat, or sleep.
Our point is to show that violent video games are very repetitive and can sometimes take over a gamers whole life. Everyday things begin having video game characteristics. For example, while a gamer is eating cereal, inside their bowls they imagine X’s, O’s, A’s, B’s, L1’s, L2’s, etc.

Day Ten

Today we worked on our final projects and then took a break to do some photo work with Christina Kral.

She is an artist and designer based in Amsterdam. Her work involves grassroots documentation and art coordination, pop culture, installation and performance art, video, photography, graphic design, music, writing, cross-disciplinary communication and experimental storytelling. During her residency at Eyebeam, Kral will engage students in a series of projects that explore the relationships between avant-garde cinema, feminist art practice and audio-visual narrative. Kral holds a European Master of Media Art from the University of Portsmouth, England.

We took photographs in the area and wrote down snippets of overheard conversations and then combined the text and images to form stories.

Day Nine

Today we met JooYoun Paek. She is an object maker. First, she observes people doing everyday things like dressing and undressing, drinking and eating, calling and texting on cell phones, writing emails and letters, folding origami, etc. Then, she uses her observations on human habits and behavior to design interactive objects for public spaces. JooYoun attended NYU’s graduate Interactive Telecommunications Program, and has shown her work internationally.

As an Eyebeam Resident, JooYoun aims to combine art and activism to explore the relationships between design, marketing, consumerism, and waste management in her home turf: New York City.

We worked with her to make beautiful sculptures out of plastic bags. And afterward we continued to work on our final projects.

Day Eight

Today we met with Friedrich again. We played the video game Unreal Tournament in some unusual ways.

Instead of shooting each other we played hide and seek, and made a dance video.

And now we're preparing for the final week of classes and beginning to plan our final projects.

Today we finished up our wearable technology projects with Hannah and Mika.

Unfortunately, I, DDC08, was at home sick and didn't see how the projects turned out, but I'm sure they looked great!

Happy beginning of the second week of Digital Day Camp!

Today we met Taeyoon Choi, a resident at Eyebeam: Taeyoon Choi is a Seoul-based artist working with performance and digital media. Choi's works intervene into urban media spaces humorously, in order to deliver critical commentary on contemporary digital culture. Choi is involved in interdisciplinary collaboration with various networks and collectives including: FunOut Urban Game Inc, DOTPLAY Mobile Hacking Workshop, and Upgrade! Seoul. Choi earned a B.F.A at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and completed a M.S. at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. Choi is a 2008 commissioned resident artist at the Eyebeam Center for Art and Technology, NYC.

On day four of DDC we met Jamie O'Shea, a resident at Eyebeam whose projects play with the line between art and invention. He has made a working time machine, a smell capturing machine, as well as Placebo brand placebos.

On our second day of classes we met with an artist named Friedrich Kirschner: Friedrich joins Eyebeam as a fellow in the Production Lab. He is also a filmmaker, visual artist and board member of the Academy of Machinima Arts and Sciences, and re-purposes computer games to
create animated narratives and interactive performances. Friedrich’s work has been shown and performed at various international animation festivals and it occasionally spreads into the physical realm as well, where he investigates the impact of milk and other liquids on computer
graphics.

We are going to coney island tomorrow exciting but on the other hand sad it not what it looks like get was before all colorful and crazywith all the lights everywhere. The rides and people feeling happy. coney island was the one place to go and hang out and eat Mathis Famous hot dogs but it was not like it us to be but it still fun to me in my eyes so I can not wait to go tomorrow.

The coney island i grew up with use to be fun but now it is boring because i went there several times already but it is sometimes fun in the night the last time i went to coney island is the same week school was finishing because kids from other schools went there it was crazzii because this girl got drunk and she was falling all over the place and people had there boom box so it was kinda cool that day i guess but the food is nasty......

This is my first blog post ever and my assignment is to write what I know about Coney Island. What I know about Coney Island is that it is a amusement park with a ride called the "Cyclone." The Cyclone was going to be taken down, but they decided to keep it up. Although, I have never been there, I have been told that there is a beach there, but it is pretty dirty and there are also arcades. It is very amusing to go with your friends and I cannot wait.

I don't know much about Coney Island, but I heard that there is some cool places there. Last week, my and my friends where at the beach and I can say that the beach is a really atractive place to be. I hope that next time I get more time to visit some other places... 'cause Coney Island seems like a different places with different admirable things.

First Day of DDC08

Today we became familiar with the concept of interactivity and fakery.

We met Zach Lieberman:

Zachary has a simple goal: he wants you surprised. He creates artwork that uses technology in a playful and seamless way to explore the nature of communication and the delicate boundary between the visible and the invisible. He makes performances, installations, and on-line works that investigate gestural input, augmentation of the body, kinetic response and magic. Zachary’s projects and talks have delighted audiences world-wide and garnered multiple awards and recognition. Currently he is developing a suite of software for disabled students that transforms their movement into an audio-visual response as a means for performance and self-expression and, together with collaborator Theo Watson, openFrameworks, an open source toolkit for creative coding in c++.

Founded in 1997, Eyebeam is an art and technology center that provides the space and state-of-the-art tools for digital experimentation. Since its beginning, artists, programmers, hackers, activists, technologists, kids and adults have come to Eyebeam to share ideas, find collaborators, experiment with new tools and create new work.

Eyebeam is seeking high school students (sophomores, juniors, seniors) who would be interested in participating in a PAID summer opportunity involving interactive art projects? Eyebeam will produce its ninth annual Digital Day Camp (DDC) Program in July 2008, and would like to extend an invitation to any NYC public high school student.

DDC 2008 is focused on the theme of ‘Better Than the Real Thing,’ which explores the tension of real versus fake. What is authentic in the realm of the digital? Can something be so fake that it becomes real? How can hoaxes, recreations, and illusions be used aesthetically and critically? DDC 2008 will investigate the theme via the making of interactive art projects.

All student participants will receive a $20 per day stipend for each of the full days listed below. Students will not be paid for days/hours they do not attend the program.
